The idea was conceived by Garnet Walker and was built under the supervision of Curtis Cooper. Funds for the construction of the monument were donated by local citizens of Wayne County. It stands in the courthouse lawn in Monticello and was the first monument built in the state of Kentucky by a Disabled American Veterans Chapter, Roy D. Dishman who was commander of the Wayne County Chapter 105 of Disabled American Veterans when the memorial was erected. When Pearl Harbor forced the United States into the Second World War, Wayne County again furnished its quota of manpower needed for protection of the country and its people. Seventy of Wayne County's best young men gave their lives to this cause. Prayer was given by Rev. Arnold Lovett, pastor of Immanuel Baptist Church during the dedication services honoring the deceased servicemen; Roll Call was by Obie S. Corder, past commander of Chapter 105. Rifle Salute was given by the National Guard and Taps by Virgil Daffron. The bronze plaque on the front of the memorial bears the names of: |
